6. Evaluation Important
The evaluation will assess both the process and outcomes of the traineeship.  This can be seen in the “Logic” models below, one for each of the grant’s three major objectives:

    • The Traineeship: To train a cadre of mid-career professionals from Eastern and Southern Africa to become scholars of research ethics on issues particularly relevant in the African context by providing them with the necessary skills, tools, and experiences to be successful researchers and teachers

    • The Research Projects:  To support advanced research training and practical research experience on ethical issues related to their specific disciplines or institutional roles, so that trainees may return to their home institutions to continue a professional career dedicated to scholarly inquiry on bioethics in the African context

    • The New Curriculum:  To support the development of research ethics curriculum, including university courses, training modules, and workshop materials, focused on ethical issues of importance in sub- Saharan Africa, to be used at University of Malawi and at the institutions of the participating trainees.

The models indicate the main inputs or activities to be undertaken, the expected product or output, anticipated outcomes or impacts and how the outputs and impacts will be measured.  For example, the selection process culminates in the recruitment and enrollment of 3 trainees per year and if successful would bring in a full complement of qualified students.  The evaluation of the selection process would involve comparing the trainees’ backgrounds against the selection criteria.  The main objective is to develop a research ethics curriculum.  The outputs would be courses that African students would take, the impact would be a sustainable program that could be evaluated by student, faculty, and medical community surveys about the new program.

The specific design of the evaluation measurements and tools will be developed during the planning phase of the grant.
