Anatomy Department

The anatomy block accommodates Departments of Anatomy, ICT and Premedical Sciences Programme offices.

 STAFFING

There are currently four academic members of staff on ground.

 TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The academic year began in January 2008.  Anatomy was involved in Teaching MBBS Year 1, Year 2, Pharmacy Year 1 and MLT Year 1. In MBBS Year 1 out of 71 student who sat for End of Year Examination, 8 failed.  In MBBS Year 2 there were 42 students.  One student wrote deferred examination and 4 failed the exams.  In Pharmacy all students passed Anatomy.  In MLT programme out of 31 students 2 failed the exams.

 The Department continued to employ newly qualified doctors as demonstrators in its Anatomy practical sessions. This appeared to improve students’ performance. Next year Registrars from the surgical disciplines will join the junior doctors for demonstration. The department is grateful to all members of staff for their contribution.

 NEW STAFF

We were joined by three members of staff this year: Mrs C Kumwenda, Departmental Secretary, Mr L Tembo and Ms T Kasambala as Staff Associates.

 EXTERNAL EXAMINER

Prof Mekbed Afework from the University of Addis Ababa served as External Examiner for the first time and he has written a good report on the quality of teaching, assessment procedures students’ performance.

 VISITING LECTURERS

 Dr Geney Gunston from South Africa and Prof Massresha Abuhay from Ethiopia were the two visiting lecturers in the department.

 DEVELOPMENTS

·         The embalming services are still being patronized by the general public.

  • Professor B C Msamati left the department in August, 2008.  Mr Mpembeka was dismissed in September, 2008.

 RESEARCH PROJECTS

  1. The department is doing a research in “Hard bone tissue” with Y Juwayeyi and Tim Bromage.
