The MORDOR-Malawi trial (Childhood Mortality Reduction after Oral Azithromycin in Mangochi, Malawi) is being conducted in collaboration with the College of Medicine, the Blantyre Community of Ophtamology and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK). The project aims to determine whether mass drug administration (MDA) with the broad-spectrum antibiotic Azithromycin reduces under-five mortality and morbidity in children living in the Mangochi district. The MORDOR trial is collecting biological samples collected from children to measure the impact of MDA on prevalence of malaria; carriage of ocular, respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens; intestinal inflammation and permeability; microbial translocation and immune responses.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Keep a record of all samples that come into the laboratory;
  • Ensure that the laboratory is well stocked and that the equipment is in good working order;
  • Ensure that records are maintained;
  • Analyze specimens sent to the laboratory using appropriate techniques including PCR and ELISA;
  • Prepare buffer solutions, reagent and media;
  • Enter data electronically and in laboratory notebooks;
  • Undertake all work following the relevant safety rules and regulations.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have a Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Microbiology from any recognized institution. Those with Degree in these and relevant fields will have an added advantage;
  • Must be recognized by the Medical Council of Malawi.
