The Department, Blantyre

Undergraduates

60 final year medical rotate through the department each year. 

Undergraduate post graduate nursing students also get their clinical paediatric experience in the department.

Undergraduate pharmacy students join our wardrounds

We also host a large number of overseas medical students.

Postgraduates

We provide post graduate medical education for paediatric specialists in training. Our postgraduate programme has been established for 5 years and our MMed training in Paediatrics & Child Health is fully accredited by the South African College of Paediatrics and the SA Health Professions Council. 

We host a large number of overseas medical trainees and from January 2012 we will train post graduate paediatric trainees from other African countries.

Clinical Paediatrics

100.000 sick infants and children are reviewed each year by staff in the department and 25,000 of these children are admitted to the department. 

Patients are admitted to one of our 8 wards: 

Chathinka Neonatal Nursery (40 cots), Kangaroo Mother Care (17 beds)

Special Care Ward (50 beds)

Nursery (30 beds)

Grace Malenga ward (27 beds)

Ankie Borgstein ward (50 beds)

Medical ward (20 beds)

Surgical ward (16 beds), 

Orthopaedic ward (20 beds) 

Oncology (16 beds). 

Paediatric Research Ward (14 beds)

Our outpatient clinics include

General outpatient clinic 

Paediatric HIV clinic (daily)

Cardiac outpatient clinic (weekly)

Sickle cell disease clinic (weekly)

Diabetic clinic (bi monthly)

TB clinic (weekly)

Malnutrition follow up (weekly)

Neonatal follow up (bi weekly)

Palliative care follow up

Oncology patients follow up
