Welcome to Surgery Department


The department continues to collaborate and work closely with other institutions and organizations. These include:

  • The Beit Trust Cure International Hospital (BTCI)

Post graduate trainees from BTCI rotate through the Dept of surgery and vice versa. Orthopaedic consultants from BTCI on Honorary appointment in COM continue to support the department in teaching, research and clinical service 

  • Malawi orthopaedic clinical officer Training Programme.

This programme for training orthopaedic clinical officers continues to be based in the department of surgery. With full funding from the ministry of health of health a new intake will start an 18 months diploma programme in January 2009 

  • Malawi college of health sciences / Malamulo college of health sciences

The department continues to work with the above institutions in the areas of intern supervision and provision of external examiners. 

  • The collaboration with Malawi.kom NGO was fully operational in 2008 with a Dutch surgeon rotating in the department providing teaching and service full the full year. The current MOU will run till end 2009.
  • Lions Eye Hospital

There is full collaboration in teaching, research, clinical service activities between the department and the eye hospital. Links with Tubingen University in Germany continued strongly and all three MMED candidates and the consultant were again sponsored on an educational visit to German. 2 candidates finished year 2 and will sit MMED Part examinations in March 2009. 1 candidate finished year 1. They are supported with funding from CBM.

  • Manneheim University German

The link with Manneheim University in German is progressing well. 2 medical students, 1 registrar and 1 consultant from the department have visited Germany and in return 2 German medical students and 1 consultant have visited the department. These exchanges continue to enrich the two departments. The visiting German consultant conducted an endoscopy workshop which was very well attended.  

 During 2008, undergraduate teaching progressed well at 3rd 4th and 5th year. All third and fourth year students progressed to the next year. Two fifth year students failed their final surgery examinations and will sit supplementary examinations in May 2009.

 On postgraduate training, local post graduate activities revolved mainly around the trainees on membership/fellowship examinations of the College of Surgeons of East Central Southern Africa, the MMed (Surg) and MMed (Opth) programmes of the College of Medicine. Dr Chiundira passed MMED Surg part 1 and is expected to finish in 2010. Dr Banza will sit for the final COSECSA Fellowship examinations in December 2009. Drs P Kamalo and P Nowa are progressing well with postgraduate training in neurosurgery  and general surgery respectively in South Africa.

 Members in the department continued to be actively involved in several research activities; the results of which are being published in peer reviewed journals.

 College of Medicine department of surgery staff continued to provide clinical services to the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.W
