POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HIV MEDICINE

The College of Medicine (CoM) was established in 1991 as a constituent college of the University of Malawi with a mission “to be an academic centre of excellence in the training of doctors and other health professionals in clinical service and medical research, responsive to the health needs of Malawi and its neighbours within the Southern African region”. The Faculty of Medicine offers a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV medicine, which is in addition to the many highly successful health related courses including the MBBS programme.

HIV continues to be a major health issue in Malawi and the Sub-Sahara African region. As such, Malawi has embarked on an accelerated aggressive scale-up of ART provision with aim to control the HIV epidemic by 2030. To achieve these targets, Malawi needs to have large numbers of trained health care workers to deliver care to HIV infected patients and deliver preventive measures. The postgraduate diploma in HIV medicine will enable the practitioner to work at HIV medicine specialist level, managing complex HIV issues at urban health centre, district and tertiary/referral hospital level.

Who should apply? Health practitioners who are interested in acquiring skills to work at HIV Medicine specialist level.

Course content: This is a one and a half-year postgraduate diploma program with modules in Virology and immunology; Epidemiology of HIV; HIV Diagnosis, Transmission and Prevention of transmission; Laboratory monitoring in the management of HIV disease;

Goals of Antiretroviral therapy (ART) and Classes of Drugs for the management of HIV (pharmacology); Complications of HIV infection; Sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV; HIV and Psychosocial and ethical issues; Supportive Management of the HIV infected patient; and Occupational Health and HIV.

Mode of delivery: The program will be delivered part-time over 3 semesters via a combination of seminars, tutorials, supervised clinical practice and self-study delivered through: face to face lectures or via several e-learning platforms and practical work with patient contact via the ART clinic and medical wards at QECH.

Program fees: USD 2,900

Admission Requirements:

  1. A degree in Clinical Medicine or Nursing.
  2. Working experience of at least 2 years experience working in private or government health facilities, in research and academic institutions (universities) and NGOs dealing with HIV care provision.
  3. Registered with the relevant regulatory body

A non-refundable application fee of MK8000.00 for Malawians and $300.00 for non-Malawians.
