Study Physician – Training and Research Unit of Excellence

Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) is a young and vibrant research group at the College of Medicine specializing in high quality malaria and anemia research. Among other research studies, the unit is conducting a study in Intermittent Preventive Treatment with DHA-piperaquine for malaria in pregnancy in areas with high sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance in Africa in Blantyre, Chikhwawa and Mangochi hospitals.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of a Study Physician.

  • The candidate must have MBBS or equivalent from recognized institution

  • The candidate must have a valid medical practice license.

  • The candidate must have least 1-year experience in research setting. Those with clinical trial experience will have an added advantage.

  • Candidates with a master’s degree in public health in epidemiology will have an added advantage.


  • Planning and coordinating the initiation of research study protocol, and the establishment of operating policies and procedures at the sites according to instructions provided by the Principal Investigators.

  • Coordinating all activities for the study at the site.

  • Ensuring that the study is conducted in compliance with the GCP, GCLP and other applicable IRB and regulatory authority regulations at the site.

  • Coordinating the collection of research data, recruitment, follow-up and completion of research subjects and/or volunteers, as appropriate to specific study objectives and work scope.

  • Ensuring the smooth and efficient day to day operation of research and data collection activities at the site; acting as the primary administrative point of contact for internal research staff and as the principle operational liaison for other research organizations, funding agencies and regulating bodies at the site.

  • Coordinating the day-to-day activities of any technical support staff specifically engaged in the carrying out of research/clinical protocol, as appropriate to the position.

  • Tracking the progress and quality of work being performed in accordance to the protocol and prepares monthly status reports.

  • Tracking and analyzing projects’ performance, expenditures, procurement and report about any possible or current blockers, risks, overflows, deficits.

  • Coordinating the procurement of project equipment and supplies with relevant personnel.

  • Planning and coordinating the staffing of research studies, to include the recruitment and administration of research support staff, as appropriate to the activity.

  • Acting as a communication link between all team members and ensuring the efficient performance of the team.

  • Providing medical review of patients at the site.

  • Reviewing all study severe adverse events from all sites.

  • Performing other related duties as required by the site PI.
