Assistant Lecturer


The College of Medicine, a constituent College of the University of Malawi intends to establish an Emergency Medicine Unit and roll out a Masters of Medicine in Emergency Medicine – MMed (EM) in the Faculty of Medicine to start in September 2020. Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Assistant Lecturer in Emergency Medicine.

Position Summary

The Assistant Lecturer post is a training position within the academic ranks of the University aimed at staff capacity development. This post is reserved for Malawian nationals. The post holder will be required to attain MMed (EM) in order to satisfy the requirement for appointment on the substantive Lecturer post. The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year renewable contract until attainment of relevant postgraduate qualifications, at which point the contract will be converted to a permanent contract. The candidate will be supported to attain MMed (EM)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Personal Career Development
    • Engage in postgraduate MMed (EM)
  2. Undergraduate student teaching and supervision: under supervision of senior academic members of staff
  • Teach students
  • Conduct clinical demonstrations and tutorials
  • Participate in setting examinations
  • Assist in the assessment of students
  1. Research and Publication
  • Write concept notes in consultation with senior academic members of the department
  • Participate in writing research proposals and submit them for funding
  • Participate in conducting research in collaboration with senior members of staff
  • Participate in dissemination of research results at conferences and in publications
  1. Administrative Duties
  • Attend departmental, faculty, College and other meetings as required.


The applicants must have the following:

  • Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery degree or its equivalent from a recognized and reputable institution.
  • Have at least 1 year of post-internship clinical experience.
  • Be Registered with and be in good standing with the Medical Council of Malawi.
