The College of Medicine, (COM) in its strive to continue being an Academic Center of Excellence that answers to the health need of Malawi and the African region is planning to establish a Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree Course to train Dental Surgeons. This will be the first institution in Malawi to offer a graduate level dental programme at undergraduate level. COM is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified Dental Surgeons to fill the vacant positions of Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor in the following sub specialties

 

1: Oral Surgery

2: Dental Public Health

3: Restorative Dentistry

4: Oral Sciences

1. Assistant Lecturer

Position Summary

The Assistant Lecturer post is a training position within the academic ranks of the University aimed at staff capacity development. This post is reserved for Malawian nationals. The post holder will be required to attain the relevant postgraduate qualification, initially at Masters level, in one of the subspecialties listed above in order to satisfy the requirement for appointment on the substantive Lecturer post. The successful candidate will be offered a 2-year renewable contract until attainment of relevant postgraduate qualifications, at which point the contract will be converted to a permanent contract. The candidate will be supported to obtain a postgraduate qualification in the subspecialties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Personal Career Development

    • Engage in postgraduate training, initially to Masters level in a chosen area of subspecialty, in order to attain the level of lecturer.

  2. Teaching

  • Teach students under the supervision of a senior academic member of staff

  • Conduct clinical demonstrations and tutorials

  • set exams under the supervision of a senior academic member of staff

  • Assist in the assessment of students

  1. Student attachment/Clinical Supervision

  • Assist in the supervision of students on attachment and during clinical sessions

  1. Research and Publication

  • Write concept notes in consultation with senior academic members of the department

  • Participate in writing research proposals and submit them for funding

  • Participate in conducting research in collaboration with senior members of staff

  • Participate in disseminating of research results at conferences and in publications

  1. Administrative Duties

  • Attend departmental, faculty, College and other meetings as required.

Requirements

The applicants must have the following:

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree or its equivalent from a recognized and reputable institution.

  • Have at least 2 years of post-internship clinical experience.

  • Be Registered with the Medical Council of Malawi.

2. Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor

Position Summary

These positions are for dental surgeons with at least a Master’s degree or higher postgraduate qualifications. The level of appointment at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, or Professor is dependent on standard university criteria such as postgraduate qualifications, publications, research, academic scholarship and academic leadership. They will be expected to teach and supervise students; have clinical responsibilities; be actively engaged in university administrative duties; conduct research in their area of specialization; and conduct consultancies and outreach programmes. The successful candidate will be offered an employment contract in line with the University of Malawi terms and conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teaching

  • Develop and update course outlines

  • Prepare lectures, and deliver course work

  • Conduct clinical work and demonstrations to students and be involved in e- learning and webinars

  • Set exams and conduct assessment of students and be involved in quality control

  1. Student Attachment/Supervision

  • Plan and arrange student attachments

  • Provide guidelines for student placement

  • Supervise student on attachment

  • Supervise undergraduates and students in writing research papers and dissertations

  1. Research, Consultancy and Outreach

  • Write research proposals and submit them for funding

  • Conduct research

  • Disseminate research results at conferences and in publications

  1. Administrative duties

  • Assume leadership roles in the university

  • Attend departmental, faculty, College, University and other meeting as required. Conduct other duties as may be specified by senior colleagues.

Requirements

Applicants must have the following:

  • At least a Master’s degree in the subspecialties listed or other oral health areas. Those with higher postgraduate academic and / or professional qualifications will have an added advantage. Priority is for the listed subspecialties.

  • 2 years of practical experience in relevant fields after attainment of the postgraduate qualification

  • Current registration and in good standing with the Malawi Medical Council or similar regulatory authority

Those with prior experience in health profession education will have an added advantage.
