The College of Medicine, a constituent College of the University of Malawi intends to establish an Emergency Medicine Unit and roll out a Masters of Medicine in Emergency Medicine – MMed (EM) in the Faculty of Medicine to start in September 2020. Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Assistant Lecturer in Emergency Medicine.

Position Summary

These positions are for Emergency Medicine specialists with at least a Masters degree or higher postgraduate qualifications in Emergency Medicine. The level of appointment at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, or Professor is dependent on standard university criteria such as postgraduate qualifications, publications, research, academic scholarship and academic leadership. They will be expected to teach and supervise students; have clinical responsibilities; be actively engaged in university administrative duties; conduct research in their area of specialization; and conduct consultancies and outreach programmes. The successful candidate will be offered an employment contract in line with the University of Malawi terms and conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Develop and update courses
  • Prepare lectures, and deliver course work
  • Conduct clinical work and demonstrations to students and be involved in e- learning and webinars
  • Set exams and conduct assessment of  students and be involved in  quality control

Student Attachment/Supervision

  • Plan and arrange student attachments
  • Provide guidelines for student placement
  • Supervise student on attachment
  • Supervise undergraduates and postgraduate students in writing research papers and dissertations

Research, Consultancy and Outreach

  • Write research proposals and submit them for funding
  • Conduct research
  • Disseminate research results at conferences and in publications

Administrative duties

  • Assume leadership roles in the university
  • Attend departmental, faculty, College, University and other meeting as required. Conduct other duties as may be specified by senior colleagues.


Applicants must have the following:

  • At least a Master’s degree in Emergency Medicine. Those with higher postgraduate academic and / or professional qualifications will have an added advantage.
  • 2 years of practical experience in Emergency Medicine after attainment of the postgraduate qualification
  • Current registration and in good standing with the Malawi Medical Council or similar regulatory authority

Those with prior experience in health profession education will have an added advantage.
