JOB PURPOSE

To make a leading contribution to the Blantyre Blantyre Research Facility which is a new laboratory within the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). The facility is a collaboration between KUHeS & University of Glasgow and is funded by Scottish Government International Development Department. Specifically, the postholder will provide additional data for projects underway in the laboratory:

This project is focussed on understanding the prevalence and mechanisms of autoimmune disease in Malawi.

The post requires a strong understanding of the immunology of autoimmunity. The applicant should have a solid background in cell biology and immunology and will also be required to have extensive experience in multiparameter flow cytometry, histology and microscopy.

Postholder will be working with Dr Mwapatsa Mipando & Prof Paul Garside in the Blantyre Blantyre Research Project. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage, and direct projects as requested.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Take a leading role in the planning and conducting of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and KUHeS strategy.
2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project and subject area, and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.
5. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/University and wider community [eg Academic and Industrial Partners].
8. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and College research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the College.
9. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and University, including budgets/expenditure.
11. Make a leading contribution to teaching activities [eg demonstrating etc] and associated admin as assigned by Dr Mwapatsa Mipando (Kamuzu University of Health Sciences) & Prof Paul Garside (University of Glasgow)
12. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field / discipline.
13. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
14. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Dr Mwapatsa Mipando & Prof Paul Garside.

QUALIFICATIONS

        ESSENTIAL

A1. A PhD in a relevant scientific area or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role[s]

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

       ESSENTIAL

B1. Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in a research related field (specifically immunology and autoimmunity)
B2. Knowledge of autoimmune diseases, with extensive experience in multiparameter flow cytometry, histology and microscopy.
B3. Excellent skills in a range of molecular biology techniques.
B4. Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.

DESIRABLE
C1. Skills in bioinformatic analyses.

EXPERIENCE

     ESSENTIAL

D1. Project or subject specific experience, particularly experience of working with primary human samples from patients and healthy individuals.
D2. Experience with immunological techniques such as cell isolation (e.g. magnetic separation and flow cytometric cell sorting), flow cytometry, antibody staining and tissue culture.
D3. Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
D4. A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences
D5. Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
D6. Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design and analysis of experiments and drafting of papers
D7. Experience in undertaking independent research

DESIRABLE

E1. Experience with single cell RNA sequencing and cell sorting.
