Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Procurement Officer tenable at College of Medicine, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi (UNIMA). The position seeks a candidate with hands-on experience in local and international procurement processes as well as in handling procurement for research partners.

Position Summary

Reporting to the College Principal, the Procurement Officer will be responsible for strategic leadership and overall management of the Procurement Unit to ensure effective delivery of procurement services in order to obtain the best value for money. The successful candidate will be offered an employment contract in line with University of Malawi terms and conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providing strategic leadership and management of the Procurement Unit;

  • Implementing and reviewing procurement policies, strategies, systems, regulations and procedures;

  • Planning, implementing and monitoring procurement activities;

  • Processing procurement contracts and approving the issuing of purchase orders;

  • Providing technical support to line managers and users;

  • Managing and guiding procurement processes and transactions;

  • Reviewing and analyzing supplier terms, prices and performance;

  • Researching open market and contract purchase prices for the Internal Procurement Committee;

  • Introducing and implementing sourcing strategies

  • Servicing internal procurement committee;

  • Maintaining records to ensure that procurement processes, decisions and contractual agreements are accurately documented for accountability and audit purposes;

  • Supervise staff in the procurement unit

  • Ensuring compliance with legal and other regulatory frameworks;

  • Coordinating and monitoring due diligence initiatives;

  • Producing relevant reports;

  • Attending client queries.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement or related field.

  • Those with Master’s degree in Procurement or related field will have an added advantage

  • Professional certification

  • Hands-on experience in using e-procurement systems

  • 5 years’ experience in a donor-funded or research institution.
