Background

With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US Government, the College of Medicine at the University of Malawi is implementing a capacity building programme for Building Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Diseases and Disorders Late-Stage Translation called the NCD- Brite Programme. The CoM is implementing this with its key partners, UNC Project (Lilongwe) and Dignitas International (Zomba).

A vacancy has arisen for the post of Project Manager at the CoM to support the activities of the NCD-Brite Project which runs up to 2022.

Job description – Project Manager

Description

The post holder will have the leading role in planning, co-ordinating and completing the project under the guidance of Principal Investigators (PIs). S/he should have excellent communication and presentation skills, together with the ability to organise and motivate others. The post holder should demonstrate flair, enthusiasm, innovation and leadership when faced with challenges and will provide strategic, tactical and operational management skills in the planning and execution of the project. S/he should demonstrate multi-tasking skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.

Previous experience in education and training and/research project management and co -ordination of training grants is desirable. Furthermore, appropriate academic and/or vocational qualifications are necessary. Previous service in an NIH-Funded project or in an academic/research institution is an added advantage.

Responsibilities

  • The overall efficient day-to-day management of the project;

  • Support the recruitment, retention, training, appraisal and supervision of interns and mentored research fellows;

  • Observance of University procedures to ensure adherence to project guidelines and administrative requirements;

  • Ensuring timely achievement of project milestones;

  • Processing and subsequent efficient and effective use of data for decision making;

  • Monitoring Project’s progress to ensure compliance with and adherence to the project plan and to identify, evaluate and rectify problems;

  • Management of the project budget(s) in consultation with Principal Investigators;

  • Co-ordinate the preparation and publication of project reports and information, ensuring that they meet regulatory, contractual and ethical requirements;

  • Provision of regular and ad hoc information, both written and verbal, to the Principal Investigators;

  • Work with the Principal Investigators to ensure that the project is meeting its targets, is producing meaningful output and to predict and plan any changes that warrant requests to changes in protocol, funding or time;

  • Planning and supporting meetings;

  • Creation and maintenance of all project files, including the project master file, and oversight files.
