Research Assistants (4 positions) – Malaria Vector Studies

The Malaria Alert Centre (MAC) requires the services of enthusiastic individuals to work in various positions in studies operating under the International Centre of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) project for a period ranging from one to six years. The project seeks to better understand the persistence of malaria in Malawi by conducting community-based cohort studies and collecting data in Health Centres.

Position summary:

Reporting to the Health Centre Study Coordinator, the Research Assistants will be responsible for planning fieldwork and supervising data collection in four rural health center catchment areas in Phalombe or Machinga Districts. 


Duties and Responsibilities

Among others, Research Assistants shall perform the following duties;

  • Developing/ executing work plans
  • Maintaining field team inventories (personnel and equipment)
  • Deploying field teams
  • Monitoring work schedules
  • Managing Specimen and data collection
  • Communicating with PIs/PDs Project Leaders, and the study coordinator


Qualifications and Experience

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant area would be an added advantage
  • Good computer skills including statistical packages
  • Ability to interpret and follow standard operating procedures
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with entomologic data collection
  • Strong leadership skills


The position is available for an initial period of two years and renewable subject to performance and availability of funding. The position will be associated with salaries and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to contract staff at Malaria Alert Centre, College of Medicine.
