MAC-Communicable Diseases Action Centre (MAC-CDAC) is an institution under the College of Medicine that works with Ministry of health, local and international health agencies to address priority health problems such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, neglected tropical diseases and other communicable diseases. Focusing on operational and evidence synthesis research, capacity building and training, health care systems strengthening, disease surveillance, and monitoring and impact evaluation, MAC contributes to evidence based policy formulation and health programs implementation in Malawi and the SADC region. MAC requires the services of enthusiastic individuals to work in various positions in studies operating under the International Centre of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) project for a period ranging from one to six years. The project seeks to better understand the persistence of malaria in Malawi by conducting community-based cohort studies and collecting data in Health Centres.

  1. Post-doctoral Fellowship (1 Position) – Blantyre

A post-doctoral fellowship position is available at Malaria Alert Centre of the College of Medicine to conduct research associated with the Malawi International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research (ICEMR). The research aims of the project are to assess the combined effects of the RTS,S vaccine and PBO nets in Malawi. The primary responsibilities of the fellow will be to work with international collaborators to set up the study and run it.

Duration of Contract: 2 years and it’s renewable subject to performance and availability of funding

Post-Doc Aims:

  • Launch and oversee the study: Combined effects of RTS,S and PBO nets in Malawi
  • Work with PIs to plan study implementation and workflow
  • Anticipate and troubleshoot problems that arise during the study
  • Analyze and write up study results
  • With support of PIs, write scientific manuscripts, develop independent research questions and apply for further grant funding

Training will include:

  • Hands-on mentored training in Malawi and where possible at some collaborating institutions.
  • Data analysis and scientific writing

  • MBBS plus a PhD in epidemiology

  1. Program Manager (1 position) – Blantyre

Job Description:

The Program Manager will be responsible for operational oversight projects carried out under the umbrella of the Malawi ICEMR. He/she will support project-level activities, supervise field staff, and track deadlines for all meetings and deliverables. The Program Manager will serve as the administrative point of contact for all field staff as well as foreign and domestic investigators and external parties (i.e., Ministry of Health personnel). The Program Manager will be expected to work independently and in collaboration with the Administration Core of the Malawi ICEMR Project. The Program Manager will be based at the Malaria Alert Centre in Blantyre.

Duration of Contract: 2 years and renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

These shall include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise and coordinate the provision of support services to field researchers

  • Ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection activities; act as the primary administrative point of contact for research staff.

  • Act as the primary administrative point of contact for research staff.

  • Send email reminders to ICEMR staff about relevant upcoming deadlines.

  • Maintain an inventory of ICEMR supplies for each project.

  • Serve as the point of contact for procurement orders.

  • Maintain a contact list for key points of contacts in each district that the ICEMR studies conduct research in. Contact key individuals prior to planned events and visits.

  • Attend field team site visits on a periodic basis to internally monitor staff activities.

  • Review all presentations, papers, reports, etc. for data consistency, spelling, grammar, and formatting.

  • Save final versions of all meeting agendas, minutes, presentations, and other materials to the internal dropbox and to the NIH SharePoint system.

  • Prepare study materials for the field team members and supervise the team as they assemble materials

  • Participate in standing ICEMR meetings/teleconferences

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess the following:

  • Experience working on academic research projects involving multiple active protocols with international collaborators.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Management, Social Science, Business, or other relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience supervising field workers for research projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa.
  1. Data Core Leader (1 position) – Blantyre

Job Description:

The Data Core Leader will be responsible for leading, mentoring, and supervising the team of the data core in all activities associated with data capture and sample tracking of projects conducted studies of the International Centers for Malaria Research (ICEMR). He will directly work with investigators assisting in design of the data capture system, defining the choice of the optimal Data Management Systems with any necessary customization, designing quality control procedures, providing training to field teams, and overseeing data capture operations. He/she will be responsible for leading internal meetings, keeping organized and up-to-date Data Core documentation, and all administrative tasks associated with the supervision of a staff of Data Managers, Data Officers, Data Entry Clerks, including yearly evaluations. He/she will be the face of the Data Management and Biostatistics Core, representing the core in meetings, as appropriate.

Duration of Contract: 2 years and renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

These shall include but are not limited to the following:

At the study planning phase

  • Work closely with ICEMR Malawian and international investigators to understand the data to be collected

  • Lead Data Managers (DM) and working with DM investigators, design forms for data collection and procedures for quality control of data and study conduct.

  • Assist investigators in the design of the data collection system including design and implementation of database, programming of CRFs to tablets.

  • Work closely with ICEMR investigators to develop QA/QC plans

At the study implementation phase

  • Working with the Data Management and Biostatistics Core staff, train the field team and make sure that the team have the necessary assistance it needs at all times.

  • Working with Data Managers, distribute, and discuss monitoring and query reports, and maintain reports updated by supervising the programming

  • Provide support to basic data analysis and scientific reports, as needed

  • Oversee preparation of all data capture material

  • Oversee the sample tracking system and staff responsible for the sample tracking system

  • Manage back-end systems and manage the process of transferring and transforming data into REDCap which is the final repository of all study data.

  • Train and supervise data clerks in performing less technical activities and routine data monitoring.

  • Site Data Officer supervision. Data Manager is also expected to help develop and to fully maintain a quality control plan for data collection and sample management in the field.

  • Travel for training, supervision, and meetings, as needed

At all times

  • Keep the inventory of the core updated and place any necessary orders

  • Meet with the Data and Management Biostatistics Core staff in a regular basis and provide mentorship to all staff members

  • Oversee, jointly with the Malaria Alert Center Administrative staff, the core facilities, and administrative aspects related to the core staff

  • Conduct yearly job performance reviews

  • Meet established timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess the following:

  • Strong leadership and organization skills
  • Capacity to work independently and be proactive
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with staff and investigators with diverse technical background, e.g., field workers, nurses, data managers, developers, IT Technicians and Administrators
  • Attention to detail
  • Articulated speech and good English writing skills
  • Bachelor degree in computer science, statistics or other related field and either a Master level degree OR a minimum of 7 years of experience working in Data Coordinating Centers
  • Experience in management and administration
  • Experience of working with different Data Management and Electronic Data Capture Systems in Tablets, preferably ODK, Mirth, a Demographic Surveillance System, and REDCap
  • Experience supervising teams of data managers and developers
  • Preferably, some knowledge and experience of research in malaria epidemiology
  • Knowledge of programing in Access, MySEQ, and SAS is highly desirable
  1. Health Centre Study Coordinator (1 positions) – Balaka

Position summary:

Reporting to the ICEMR Principal Investigator, the Research Study Coordinator will implement and supervise clinical and entomological studies in a Namanolo health centre catchment area in Balaka District. The coordinator will be responsible for managing 10-15 staff including nurses, field workers, entomological workers and data clerks.

Duration of Contract: 1 year and is renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Among others, the Health Centre Study Coordinator shall perform the following duties:

  • Implementing clinical and entomological studies in accordance with study protocols
  • Coordinating and supervising project staff
  • Creating and maintaining a quality control plan for all study activities.
  • Ensuring accountability for site activities, specimen tracking, specimen transport, and inventory
  • Coordinating regular trainings for ICEMR study staff
  • Coordinating with ICEMR PIs/ Project Leaders and other ICEMR study team members
  • Ensuring completion of all reporting requirements
  • Ensuring appropriate use of electronic and paper-based forms for collection, compilation, analysis and reporting of study data.
  • Supporting the Data Managers
  • Facilitating strong collaboration and coordination with the Health Centre staff/ management, community and other organizations working in the area.
  • Updating the ICEMR PIs/ Project Leaders and study team on the status and operations of the studies

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in public health, community nursing, clinical medicine and an MPH from a recognized institution. Diplomas in clinical medicine or nursing together with at least 5 years’ experience wills be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor degree.

  • Research leadership experience in a busy setting

  • Data management experience

  • Management experience, along with ability to work in team environment

  • Good community mobilization and engagement skills

  • Excellent computer and communication skills with good knowledge of Microsoft programs and internet application systems.

  1. Research Nurse (1 position) – Machinga

Position summary:

Reporting to the Health Centre Study Coordinator, the Research Nurse will be required to conduct community and health center based research activities at Ntaja health centre Machinga district.

Duration of Contract: 1 year and is renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Among others, the research nurse shall perform the following duties;

  • Assessing participant enrollment criteria and conducting informed consent
  • Working with enumerators to collect community-based data using tablets
  • Collection of biological samples
  • Documenting and maintaining accurate records of study participant visits, procedures and health center-based care
  • Ensuring that study procedures and protocols are followed
  • Participating in team work to conduct all aspects of the study
  • Coordinating and working closely with local health center staff and community leaders on study project activities
  • Assisting with sample organization, storage, and tracking
  • Writing monthly reports

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have a minimum of a diploma in nursing from a recognized institution with experience in a busy research setting will have an added advantage. Those with a Certificate in nursing and having over 6 years of research experience will be eligible.

  • Field experience in community engagement and research work (an added advantage)

  • Registered with the Nurses Council of Malawi.

  • Computer literate with experience in utilizing electronic data capture, Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet application systems.

  1. Entomology Research Assistant (1 position) – Malaria vector studies (Machinga)

Position summary:

Reporting to the Health Centre Study Coordinator, the Research Assistants will be responsible for planning fieldwork and supervise data collection in Ntaja health center catchment area Machinga District.

Duration of Contract: 1 year and is renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Among others, Research Assistants shall perform the following duties;

  • Developing/ executing work plans

  • Field team inventory (personnel and equipment)

  • Deployment of field teams

  • Monitoring work schedules

  • Specimen and data management

  • Communicate with principle investigators, project leaders, and the study coordinator about challenges and progress

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological sciences

  • A master’s degree will be an added advantage

  • Good computer skills including statistical packages

  • Ability to interpret and follow standard operating procedures

  • Effective report writing skills

  • Effectiveness communication skills

  • Ability to manage teams and resolve conflicts

  • Experience with entomologic data collection is a desired

  • Strong leadership skills

  1. Entomology Field worker (1 position – Malaria vector studies (Balaka))

Position summary:

Reporting to the Research Assistant, the Field Workers will be responsible for field data collection and handling mosquito specimens in four Namanolo health center catchment areas in Balaka

Duration of Contract: 1 year and is renewable subject to performance and availability of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Among others, field workers shall perform the following duties;

  • Conduct household visits

  • Evaluate bed net integrity

  • Sample mosquitoes using different techniques

  • Rear mosquito larvae to adults

  • Complete electronic data capture forms

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must have a minimum of an MSCE

  • A diploma in community/ lab technology will be an added advantage

  • Computer literate

  • Ability to use tablet computers for data collection

  • Competent motorcycle driver

  • Community engagement skills

Each position will attract a salary with benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications as applicable to contract staff at Malaria Alert Centre, College of Medicine.
