Undergraduate

MBBS1 and 2

In Years 1 & 2 the department of Medicine contributes to the basic sciences curriculum by organising a number of lectures on clinical aspects taught.

MBBS3

Year 3 Introduction to History Taking and Physical Examination
This is an introductory 1 week course for all 3rd year students at the beginning of their medical studies. All aspects of history taking and physical examination are taught.

Year 3 Clinical Attachment
During the clinical attachment the group of students are trained further in history taking and clinical examination by examining patients in the wards for 7 weeks. Teaching ward rounds and case presentations are held. In addition, basic laboratory skills are taught and a number of lectures are given on ed topics in medicine.

MBBS4

Year 4 Medical Specials
This is an intensive course in which all medical specials are taught in modules usually of one or two weeks including:

  • respiratory medicine
  • cardiovascular medicine
  • endocrinology
  • renal medicine
  • rheumatology
  • clinical pharmacology
  • gastroenterology
  • infectious disease
  • neurology
  • psychiatry
  • dermatology

MBBS5

Year 5 Clinical Attachment
In this course students are trained in diagnosis and management of the whole spectrum of diseases that occur in the country. They participate in daily ward rounds, clinics, and on-calls, by joining the interns. In addition, separate teaching ward rounds are held four times per week. Standard procedures such as aspiration of pleural fluid and lumbar puncture are taught. A number of patients are clerked and discussed with senior staff. A series of tutorials on emergency medicine are held.
