SUMMER SCHOOL

GLOBAL HEALTH LEADERSHIP AND IMPLEMENTATION

Dates: 16th to 27th September, 2019

Venue: College of Medicine, Blantyre

The Summer School is organized by the Department of Health Systems and Policy, College of Medicine in collaboration with Harvard University and Partners in Health. The aim of this two week intensive summer school is to provide participants with a greater understanding of the global interconnectedness of health problems and to equip them with knowledge and skills to analyse and address the key bottlenecks in health care delivery. The courses will focus on perspectives and insights from a range of health and social sciences in understanding and resolving the challenges of global health implementation.

Who should apply: Health practitioners, program managers, researchers and policy makers in the Ministry of Health, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Prospective MSc. students are encouraged to apply.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of this summer school, the participant should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of historical and current perspectives from a range of health and social sciences in order to analyse the causes of the world’s health problems and inequities
  • utilize case studies to critique the designs and implementation strategies of different global health projects
  • Use basic health economics methods to assess cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions
  • apply a range of methodological skills to address the multifaceted challenges in the uptake of evidence based interventions
  • discuss innovative strategies to improve healthcare delivery in resource limited settings
  • apply leadership skills to make evidence informed decisions, when faced with health system challenges

Indicative Content

The summer school is a snapshot of the MSc. in Global Health Implementation offered by the Department of Health systems and Policy at College of Medicine. Applicants may participate in the whole two weeks program or may choose to take courses in either week one or week two. The following will be the main areas of focus:

Week 1 (16-20 September 2019)

  • Global Health Principles and Practices
  • Basics of Implementation Science
  • Health Program Design, Implementation and Evaluation
  • Leadership, Ethics and Governance for Global Health Implementation

Week 2 (23-27 September 2019)

  • Introduction to Health Economics
  • Quality Management for Global Health
  • Global Health Leadership and Innovation

Teaching methods

Teaching approaches in this highly interactive summer school will include case studies, discussions, debates and lectures. The sessions will feature real cases from complex problems in global health and participants will be encouraged to analyse the cases, articulate key lessons learnt and contribute to the classroom debate.

Each participant will have an opportunity to work with an assigned faculty mentor in the development of a concept on implementation science research, health economics research or quality improvement project. The summer school will culminate in participants’ presentations of their designed projects and submission of individual assignments.

The course has attracted world-class global health experts from Harvard University, USA; University of York, UK; University of Global Health Equity, Rwanda; Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel; and College of Medicine, University of Malawi. Certification: Participants will receive 5-10 credits and a certificate upon successful completion of the courses. The credits can be transferred should the participant enrol into the MSc. in Global Health Implementation not later than five years after the summer school.

Tuition Fees: 300 USD per participant per week. The fees cover refreshments and course materials. Limited scholarships are available.
