THE MALAWI NATIONAL TB CONTROL PROGRAMME

2018 TB RESEARCH NETWORKING MEETING

The Malawi National TB Control Programme (NTP) in collaboration the College of Medicine – Helse Nord Tuberculosis Initiative (HNTI) Research Group, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW), Research for Equity and Community Health (REACH) Trust, Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU) and Challenge TB has organized the “2018 TB Research Networking Meeting”.

The objectives of the meeting are as follows:

  • Showcase diverse selection of ongoing research in Malawi
  • Strengthen the existing Malawi TB Research Network, building on previous initiatives and new opportunities.
  • Highlight the role of research in ensuring Malawi achieves immediate END TB strategy milestones to reduce year 2015’s TB incidence by 20% and TB deaths by 35% by 2020, and that no TB-affected families face catastrophic costs due to TB. 2025 targets are 50% reduction in TB incidence, and 75% reduction in TB deaths.
  • Map key research priorities for next 5 to 10 years in line with the END TB strategy.
  • Identify available funding to support TB Research Network in Malawi, and plan for future sustainability.

This two day conference will comprise key speakers, plenary session, abstract driven oral presentations, talking posters (4 min) /speed talks in the following broad thematic areas

  • TB case detection and patient care (x-rays, CAD4TB and new diagnostics)
  • Mitigating care-seeking costs for TB and multi-sectorial engagement
  • Can Malawi meet 2020 and 2025 END-TB mortality targets?
  • Kumvetselera thupi’ Engaging men in TB control interventions
  • Basic TB research in Malawi: Hosts, drugs and bugs
  • Electronic data systems (e-registrars, ePAL)
  • Abstract driven oral and electronic poster sessions

Venue: Bingu International Conference Centre, Lilongwe, Malawi

Dates: 19th and 20th November 2018

All participants are expected to cover their travel and accommodation costs with a limited numbers of travel scholarships available.
