MAC is a research institution under the College of Medicine focused on conducting operational research studies, monitoring and evaluation, building capacity of health workers in communicable diseases, including training for malaria prevention and control activities and in Malawi.  We are currently seeking young and energetic Malawians to fill various posts within the ICEMR (International Centre of Excellence in Malaria Research) research projects.

Initial contract is for two years with possibility of further extension for both posts based on performance and availability of funding.


The IT Officer will be responsible for all IT systems at the Malaria Alert Centre including network and web, database, communications, operating system and applications.


  • Contributing to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for: validating the server, monitoring bandwidth usage, performing daily backups of the server, monitoring data synced to the server for record rejections and error messages and adhering to them.
  • Managing Internet and LAN:  creating and modifying user accounts and privileges/rights, including providing read/write and read-only access; documenting which employees have received access to each location on the shared network; managing disk space, printer queues, and internet connection; and updating antivirus software and definition files.
  • Perform desktop and laptop computer support, including performing routine preventive maintenance (disk scan, deleting temp files, defragmentation, etc.); installing software patches and upgrades, troubleshooting hardware or software problems; and ensuring users are backing up their data files on the server; cleaning printers, and photocopiers every 6-12 months.
  • Ensuring license compliance for PC software.
  • Monitoring antivirus and all security applications and applying updates
  • Troubleshooting and repairing network hardware when necessary.
  • Coordinating with the Internet Service Provider to resolve any Internet connectivity issues.
  • Maintaining a public website for the ICEMR project with restricted access for documents and reports specified by the study team.
  • Support field team in data collection with access to server and making sure that all data collection devices are updated and functioning.
  • Perform hardware troubleshooting, including identifying hardware failure for all hardware warranties; coordinating with hardware vendors/manufacturers for the prompt replacement of any defective components and working with the Project internet service to solve any problems accessing the internet and/or sending and receiving email.
  • Developing and maintaining a tracking system of technical support requests from employees to measure performance against the SLAs. 
  • Assist the office in the physical inventory of all equipment and software (PC’s, laptops, printers, etc.).
  • Communicating with the project team technical support issues that affect the larger group, methods for improving daily activities, and suggestions for new processes.
  • Monthly conference call with International IT Management.  Review monthly activity, articulate and implement Action Plans relating to identified IT needs.

  • A Degree in ICT studies, with at least 3 years of experience in working in a research institution.
