VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: MANAGING EDITOR

The Malawi Medical Journal (MMJ) is a peer reviewed official journal of the College of Medicine and the Medical Association of Malawi. It is published four times annually. The journal is listed on MEDLINE, African Journals Online (AJOL) and in other premier indexing data bases. The MMJ is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of the Managing Editor.

Summary of the post

The Managing Editor will be based in Blantyre. He/she will be reporting to the Editor in-Chief and shall be responsible for managing operations of the MMJ. He/she will serve a four-year contract term, which is renewable upon satisfactory performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take charge of the daily operations of the journal, maintenance of journal equipment and installations

  • Lead and coordinate issue production, including typesetting, issue compilation, and web publication and indexing

  • Manage the journal social media accounts and content

  • Manage journal website and update content

  • Maintain adequate communication with all journal stakeholders

  • Act as liaison with the media

  • Prepare monthly statistical reports on Journal and editor performance; quarterly financial reports to compare office budget against actual expenditures; semi-annual editorial office report among others.

  • Manage production schedule and preparation of accepted manuscripts for publication.

  • Maintain close working relationships between the journal office, authors, reviewers, and the College of Medicine, while keeping Journal on track for all publication deadlines and allotted annual page budget.

  • Organize special article solicitation, submission, review, and production

  • Act as liaison between scientific community and Journal editors by fielding: questions regarding manuscript status and submission guidelines; pre-submission inquiries; feedback from authors and reviewers; questions and comments on Journal policies.

  • Arrange and facilitate journal meetings.

Required Qualifications, Experience and skills

  • Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

  • A master’s degree is an added advantage

  • Must have demonstrable experience and interest in research/publishing

  • Advanced computer skills
