HERBAL MEDICINE REGULATION WORKSHOP

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) College of Medicine (CoM) through its Africa Centof Excellence in Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM) is pleased to announce the offering of a Training Workshop in Herbal Medicine Regulation (HMR) for health professionals, biomedical scientists and herbal medicine researchers as follows:

Facilitators: Prof Lutz Heide, Mr. Daniel Maennle, Tubingen University (Germany), Prof. Ludger Wessjohann, Bioorganic Chemistry, Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (Germany), Mrs.Ute Norwig, German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfarM) (Germany), Ms Jacinta Nyaika, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Malawi), Mr. Chris Walker , Pamthunzi Learning Centre, Dr. Zacharia Magombo, National Herbarium and Botanical gardens and Dr. Cecilia Maliwichi Nyirenda,  Malawi College of Medicine.

Aim: The workshop is aimed at equipping healthcare professionals, herbal medicine scientists and practitioners with practical knowledge and skills in Herbal Medicine Regulation.

Proposed Training Course objectives                                  

By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the basic principles of herbal medicine regulation.
  2. Explain the global overview on traditional and complementary medicine regulation
  3. Describe the importance of herbal medicine regulation
  4. Describe the process of regulating herbal medicines
  5. Explain the impact of Good Agricultural Practices on quality of herbal products
  6. Identify qualitatively the presence of phytochemicals in herbal medicines
  7. Use a microscope to identify anatomical parts from herbal medicine powder
  8. Prepare a herbal medicine preparation using basic compounding techniques

Workshop Methodology

Mainly interactive sessions consisting of lectures, questions and answer and discussion, practical case studies, practical, demonstration and an educational visit. A Certificate of attendance in Herbal Medicine Regulation (HMR) will be provided for those who complete workshop. All power-point presentations will also be provided to participants by emails at the end of the workshop.

Who should apply?

This training is targeting 30 Healthcare professionals (Clinical, Nursing, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Physiotherapy and Public Health personnel). It is also targeting other biomedical scientists, postgraduate students doing research in herbal medicine may find this useful.

Target number of participants: 30 (based on first come, first serve)

Workshop fee: USD100 per participant. Course fees cover course material, and tea.  The ACEPHEM has limited scholarships to cover the workshop fees of participants. These will be awarded on merit and on first come first serve basis.  Participants are advised to find their own transport and accommodation.
